Ignite Glass Studios Wins Two Awards

Congratulations to the Tullman family and Ignite Glass Studios team for awards from AIA Chicago and the Chicago Architecture Foundation. AIA Chicago recognized the project with a SustainABILITY Leadership Award for Design Excellence. The Chicago Architecture Foundation chose the project for a Patron of the Year Award. The Tullman family’s vision, the design talents of Epstein|Metter Studio, and the construction expertise of Graycor were instrumental in successfully transforming an industrial building in the West Loop to a unique multipurpose space. DMA is proud to have managed the development effort.

DMA’s Jason Westrope recently shared his expertise in sustainable real estate development with students at the University of Maryland. Jason has served as a distinguished guest lecturer for several years as part of UMD’s Economics of Land Use course. Introducing Net Zero and Passive House concepts and strategies, Jason outlined trends and forces shaping the industry, offered DMA case studies, and profiled other projects breaking new ground in minimizing energy use and environmental impact.

The grand opening of Arbor Hills attracted hundreds of early shoppers excited about opening-day discounts and the center’s specialty retailers. The boutique outdoor center is nearly fully leased, with 18 committed tenants and 11 already open, including Lululemon, Madewell, The North Face, Sur La Table, and more. DMA has led development and tenant coordination work on behalf of North Shore Properties Group. dma|property now manages Arbor Hills.

Rivers Casino in Des Plaines was the top-performing casino in Illinois by far last year, earning $417 million before taxes and boasting some of the most profitable table games in the U.S. This report attributes the casino’s success in part to its “gleaming new facility.” DMA managed development and LEED certification for Rivers—the world’s first casino to earn LEED NC Gold.

DMA’s Charles Porter served on the eight-member jury of design and construction experts who judged the 2013 IDEAS2 Awards—for Innovative Design in Engineering and Architecture with Structural Steel. Conducted by the American Institute of Steel Construction, the awards represent the highest honor bestowed on building projects by the U.S. structural steel industry. The thirteen recognized projects include a retractable roof in Salt Lake City, a solar canopy in Chicago, and the NASCAR Hall of Fame, in Charlotte.

Assembly Row Sneak Peek

Progress continues on Assembly Row, a multi-phase, mixed-use development spanning 45 acres along the Mystic River just outside Boston. Construction began in April on a riverfront park that includes an outdoor amphitheater. Retail space is being prepared for tenant build-out on a block with residential units that will begin pre-leasing this summer, and work began this month on the addition of 32,000 square feet of retail to The Outlets at Assembly Row. On behalf of Federal Realty Investment Trust, DMA is consulting on the project’s retail component and leading tenant coordination.

A $240 million casino project under consideration in Worcester, Massachusetts could bring a downtown hotel and some 600 permanent jobs to the city. DMA client Mass Gaming & Entertainment LLC, an affiliate of Rush Street Gaming, recently presented plans and renderings to public officials. Pending city approval of the project, DMA will lead development. Previously for Rush Street Gaming, DMA led the development and LEED Gold certification of Rivers Casino, in Des Plaines, Illinois.

A profile of former Allscripts CEO Glen Tullman highlights Ignite Glass as his latest business venture—one that was personally inspired by his son. Ignite Glass opened in Chicago’s West Loop last October. DMA led work for the Tullman family to transform an existing building into the unique, multipurpose space that now hosts full-time studio artisans, glassblowing classes, and private events.

USF School of Architecture and Community Design Honors Jason Westrope

The University of South Florida’s School of Architecture and Community Design (SACD) recognized DMA’s Jason Westrope with its Distinguished Alumni Award this year. Jason is only the fourth person to receive this annual honor, established in 2010. SACD was founded with a focus on sustainable community design and development, and Jason earned a Master of Architecture from the school in 1997. On behalf of DMA clients, he has led numerous sustainable development projects and LEED initiatives; including the development of almost an acre of green roof in Chicago, nearly a megawatt of photovoltaics in Los Angeles and the first LEED Gold Certified Casino in the world, Rivers Casino. Jason serves as the Co-Chair of both the USGBC Illinois Education and Research Committee and the Hispanic American Construction Industry Association (HACIA) Sustainability and Technology Committee. Jason became a LEED accredited professional in 2003.
