The Chicago Housing Authority’s “Plan Forward” strategy is designed to complete the transformation of properties that once held high-rise public housing, revitalizing communities and renewing housing options. To move forward with the redevelopment of Cabrini-Green, the CHA asked UrbanWorks Ltd. and DMA to assess the area’s potential for retail and assist with the preparation of RFPs to be issued to developers.
The 65-acre, five-block area still open for redevelopment is bordered by North Avenue, Chicago, Halsted, and New Orleans. Plans for the largely vacant sites call for new retail and residential components, with a mix of subsidizedand market-rate units.
The CHA is working toward an expedited redevelopment effort, with construction beginning in 2015. DMA’s involvement supports swift progress and a successful, integrated outcome for these important and underutilized sites.
