Our expertise in completing complex projects with innovative technical elements met the client’s needs for this effort. The assignment: create an inviting outdoor green space for a new condominium development in a high-rise, mixed-use building. The space: a 16,000-square-foot, ninth floor roof that topped office and parking uses on the building’s west side. DMA coordinated the design and construction of a 12,000-square-foot intensive green roof garden and terrace.
The $1 million project, one of Chicago’s largest green roofs, features planters with trees, a deck and trellis system, and a variety of regional plantings in a modular grid. Work included demolishing an existing running track, reinforcing the deck with steel, and managing the movement of all materials using freight elevators, cranes, and careful planning over a tight timeframe.
This urban oasis with striking city views helped to attract buyers for The Residences at 900. The client expanded this successful roof garden concept to other roof sections of the building, and the project earned awards from the Illinois Chapter of the American Society of Landscape Architects (ILASLA) and Green Roofs for Healthy Cities.
