While with another firm (pre-DMA), Charles Porter served on the development team for this Class A office tower, which remains the tallest building in both Hartford and the state of Connecticut. The $150 million, 35-story development project finished on schedule and within budget. City Place 1 contains 786,000 square feet of office space and 32,000 square feet of retail space. When opened, the project’s tenants included the corporate offices of United Technologies Corporation (UTC), a major division of the Aetna Insurance Company, and the law firm of Day Berry & Howard.

A steel frame perimeter tube structure rests on New England bedrock, with three levels of underground parking blasted from that underlying stone. The mechanical system was connected into Hartford’s central district plant system but designed for future separation. An imported granite façade was fabricated and installed on precast panels, speeding installation.
